William L. Roberts

General Counsel / Partner

Overview

Bill Roberts is the general counsel of Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath, overseeing the firm’s global legal affairs. In his work for clients of the firm, Bill brings over 30 years of experience to high stakes, complex litigation in the representation of businesses and individuals, helping clients achieve outstanding litigation results in a broad range of areas, including intellectual property, government contracts, environmental disasters and commercial transactions.

Multiplaintiff Litigation

Bill has led the firm’s representation of thousands of clients in two large-scale, high-profile multiplaintiff litigations: (1) claims arising from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico — the largest environmental disaster in U.S. history; and (2) breach of contract and takings claims against the U.S. government relating to USDA’s Section 515 Multifamily Housing Program. Each of these matters has yielded hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation for clients.

Intellectual Property Litigation

Bill has substantial experience in intellectual property litigation. He has represented both plaintiffs and defendants on patent infringement and trade-secret misappropriation claims in courts across the country. His achievements in this space include obtaining a complete defense jury verdict against a multimillion-dollar claim of patent infringement. He also won a jury verdict for willful infringement of a patent, and has obtained for his clients preliminary and permanent injunctions against patent infringement and trade-secret misappropriation.

Appellate Litigation

Bill also has substantial appellate experience, having won appeals at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Personal Interests

Bill enjoys golfing, hiking, the great outdoors, American history, music and cheering on the Kansas Jayhawks.
