Overview

Joie Hand represents corporate entities and individual clients in civil and criminal white collar crime defense through conducting internal investigations and litigating allegations brought by the government in various enforcement actions. Joie also represents a broad range of clients in complex commercial litigation, including contract disputes, unfair competition claims, putative and certified class actions, and antitrust matters. Joie’s national practice is based in Los Angeles, began in Washington, D.C., and has hometown roots in the Midwest.

Litigation Experience

Joie is well-versed in preparing witnesses, taking and defending depositions, and drafting written advocacy to the court, including through motions seeking dismissal, summary judgment, and limitation of certain evidence before commencement of trial. She is also adept at tackling disputes brought in arbitration or mediation, advocating to courts through argument, and managing large databases and data reviews.

Joie has worked diligently for clients in case teams handling complex matters in numerous contexts, including:

  • Representing a private company in a qui tam False Claims Act case regarding the payment of tariffs upon import of goods
  • Conducting the internal investigation of a corporate client with both domestic and international operations anticipating enforcement action under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act
  • Representing executives identified as subjects in government investigations into their employing organizations
  • Representing a medical device and technology company against breach of contract claims threatened in a demand letter
  • Defending a web-based corporation in a putative class action alleging privacy violations
  • Defending a pharmaceutical manufacturer in a certified class action alleging antitrust claims
  • Advising corporate client and its internal legal team on antitrust policies and addressing potential exposure before any enforcement actions are brought
  • Second-chairing a trial before the Civilian Board of Contract Appeals

Personal Interests

In her free time, Joie is an avid reader, enjoys casual hiking and running, and appreciates traveling. She also loves engaging with students from her alma maters and participates in Notre Dame Law’s mock interview program for its first-year law students and Princeton’s interviews of applicants through the Alumni Schools Committee.
