Joshua Deringer Discusses Subadviser Swapping With BoardIQ

In “Swapping Subadvisors Rarely Works Out Well: Study,” BoardIQ spoke to investment management partner Joshua Deringer about what fund managers should do before approving swapping subadvisers.

“Based on my anecdotal experience, I would agree that changing a subadviser just to chase returns is a losing battle,” said Deringer. “But in a given situation, the changing of a subadviser could be the right decision.”

Deringer noted the importance of understanding the adviser’s strategy, goals and reasoning. Directors should know why a change is being considered, what benefits a change may bring, “and what additional risks are being taken on in a subadvisor change,” he added.
