Overview
Jeff Merritt advises businesses facing complex commercial disputes and litigation, providing practical guidance and strategic advocacy throughout all phases of the litigation process. He concentrates his practice on financial litigation, adversary proceedings and contested matters in bankruptcy court, as well as corporate trust litigation. Jeff also has significant experience assisting clients with discovery management, including e-discovery, and regularly counsels on responding to subpoenas and document requests.
Representative Litigation Experience
- Represented a national insurance company in defending against fraudulent transfer allegations in bankruptcy adversary proceedings.
- Represented financial institutions in their respective capacities as transfer agents, securities intermediaries and corporate trustees in complex disputes involving publicly traded securities, residential mortgage-backed securities and insurance-related matters.
- Guided corporate clients through the process of responding to subpoenas, including negotiating scope, ensuring compliance and protecting sensitive information.
- Managed complex e-discovery matters, advising on document preservation, production and review in high-stakes litigation.
Pro Bono
Jeff maintains an active pro bono practice, representing Minnesota nonprofit organizations, Native American tribes and individuals in a variety of matters. He is a volunteer attorney for the Pro Se Project for the U.S. District Court of Minnesota, assisting unrepresented litigants in federal court.
Prior Experience
Jeff joined Faegre Drinker from an Am Law 100 firm, where he was a finance and restructuring associate. He previously served as a law clerk to U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Cynthia Norton. During law school, he gained valuable experience as an extern for the Securities and Exchange Commission and for U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Jeffery Cavender. Before pursuing his legal career, Jeff worked as a mental and behavioral health counselor.
Personal Interests
Outside of work, Jeff enjoys spending time at his local Life Time athletic club, playing ultimate frisbee and keeping up with his kids. When time allows, he likes watching football, gaming and reading.
