Something Tastes Different: Is Medication Flavoring Compounding?

In the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy’s (NABP) Innovations publication, government and regulatory partner Libby Baney, counsel Jonathan Keller, PharmD, and government relations and regulatory affairs director Ryan Shay coauthored an article on flavoring agents in prescription medications.

First, the authors explain how the practice of medication flavoring is regulated and what has changed regarding the definition of “compounding.” They further address how states have addressed the question of whether medication flavoring constitutes compounding. In conclusion, the authors note that in all states, boards of pharmacy will decide whether non-compounding pharmacies will be able to offer flavored medications.
