Utilizing Interns Effectively While Minimizing Risk


Drinker Biddle outlined important considerations for nonprofit employers who are thinking about hiring interns.

As many nonprofits know, sourcing, developing, retaining and paying for talent can be a challenge. While employing interns can be a great, cost-effective solution, it is important for nonprofits to understand the restrictions imposed by state and federal employment laws. Failure to follow these restrictions may result in legal exposure for the organization.

Labor and Employment partner Helen Tuttle and partner Andrew Grumet, who has 20 years of experience working with nonprofits, provided insight on the dos and don’ts of engaging interns, particularly on how to develop a great pool of talent while ensuring legal compliance.
