Drew M. Horwood

Associate

Overview

Drew Horwood represents clients in complex commercial litigation across the country, with a focus on post-M&A and franchising disputes, and life insurance cases. Drew also brings in-house experience to bear when helping clients navigate and resolve disputes and corporate governance matters.

M&A and Franchising

Drew represents clients in a variety of complex commercial, shareholder, and franchising disputes in state and federal courts. Drew has helped corporate clients — including investment firms, franchisors and homebuilding companies — successfully resolve difficult disputes over their business and investment relationships.

Life Insurance

Drew advises insurers in litigation over life insurance policies, including coverage and lapse disputes, litigation over disclosures and sales practices, and cases arising from complex premium financing and estate planning arrangements.

His recent successes for clients include an Eighth Circuit affirmance of the dismissal of claims against an insurer that a universal life policy was difficult to understand and unsuitable for the owner’s financial goals; and dismissals in Minnesota and Arizona state courts for fraud, breach of contract and unfair sales practices claims brought against an insurer by high-net worth individuals seeking to hold the insurer responsible for the collapse of risky tax avoidance schemes.

Prior Experience

A former summer associate with the firm, Drew rejoined Faegre Drinker in 2021 following a clerkship with U.S. District Court Judge Rebecca R. Pallmeyer of the Northern District of Illinois, and three years at a global law firm in Chicago where he represented clients in M&A disputes and government investigations. Drew also spent six months on secondment as an in-house litigation attorney with a European energy and manufacturing conglomerate, where he helped corporate counsel develop new reporting and approval procedures and audited the company’s open litigation matters across five continents.

Before attending law school, Drew worked as a business analyst with Cargill, Inc., in Minnesota.

Personal Interests

Drew enjoys spending time with his wife and three young children and is an avid reader and cook. Drew is also an eight-time JEOPARDY! champion and Tournament of Champions contestant. He exercises his love of all things trivial whenever he can — including by hosting a yearly trivia competition for the firm’s summer associates.
