Overview
Scott Bays supports clients as they build, protect, and leverage the value of their intellectual property portfolios. With a background in software development, Scott utilizes his niche experience to support computer software developers, hardware manufacturers, data storage companies, and other high-tech industry leaders as they pursue ambitious goals. He drafts and responds to discovery requests, researches patent and trade secret issues, supports discovery disputes in patent litigation, and has drafted dispositive motions in both patent and trade secret matters.
Prior Experience
Before law school, Scott spent several years as a software developer at General Motors, where he helped lead an effort to rebuild an international tax system. His work spanned system design, database work, collaboration with business stakeholders, and user-focused development of enterprise-scale applications. That background gives him a developer’s fluency in source code, software architecture, and development practices, which he draws on when evaluating technical evidence, working with experts, and translating complex software issues for clients, courts, and opposing counsel.
Scott also served as a student attorney with the University of Michigan Human Trafficking Clinic, representing trafficking survivors in immigration proceedings and researching legal remedies for stateless workers abroad.
Personal Interests
Outside of the office, Scott enjoys hiking, backpacking, reading, and playing games with friends.
