Product liability and mass torts partner and director of Faegre Drinker’s Design Lab Ruben Gonzalez was profiled in Chicago Daily Law Bulletin’s latest “Legal Spotlight” Q&A feature, sharing his perspective on legal design, visual communication, and the evolving practice of law.
Discussing what litigators can gain from thinking like designers, Gonzalez explained that “Legal design thinking encourages lawyers to approach problems with curiosity and empathy, challenge assumptions, and think differently about solutions. Sometimes that means recognizing that the most legally sophisticated answer isn’t necessarily the most useful one.”
Gonzalez also highlighted the value of visuals in legal settings, sharing, “A great legal visual does more than decorate an argument. It simplifies complexity, creates understanding and leaves a lasting impression. It helps a jury see what happened rather than simply hear someone describe it.” He added, “Great visuals can be timelines, illustrations, animations, or sophisticated trial demonstratives.”
When asked about AI’s potential impact on the legal landscape, Gonzalez said, “What excites me most is what AI might do for people who can’t afford lawyers. We have an extraordinary number of lawyers in this country, yet far too many people still walk into courtrooms without representation. If we get this right, AI could help narrow the access to justice gap.”
