Beth Carlson provided insight to SHRM about completing federal I-9, employment-eligibility verification requirements during the coronavirus outbreak. Carlson said that even though there is a present health crisis, the government is not relaxing the rules when it comes to I-9 forms.
Moreover, employers (or authorized representatives) must still examine (with the new hire physically present) identification documents to verify authenticity.
"As of this time, this and all other Form I-9 requirements remain in effect." BETH CARLSONCarlson added that as of right now, there is no substitute for in-person employment verification. Employers are precluded from using remote options including, but not limited to: videoconferencing, faxing, and webcams.
