Beth Carlson Speaks with SHRM on Employment-Eligibility Verification During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Beth Carlson provided insight to SHRM about completing federal I-9, employment-eligibility verification requirements during the coronavirus outbreak. Carlson said that even though there is a present health crisis, the government is not relaxing the rules when it comes to I-9 forms.

Moreover, employers (or authorized representatives) must still examine (with the new hire physically present) identification documents to verify authenticity.

Carlson added that as of right now, there is no substitute for in-person employment verification. Employers are precluded from using remote options including, but not limited to: videoconferencing, faxing, and webcams.
