Back to School Update on School-Related Parental Leave

By Lynne Anne Anderson

Lynne Anderson published an article for the LaborSphere blog titled, “Back to School Update on School-Related Parental Leave.” Lynne discusses state laws that require employers to give employees time for their children’s school-related activities. California, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, Rhode Island and Vermont, for example, all have laws in place affecting private employers.

While most of these state laws allow an employer to ask for verification, the employer must still accept any documentation the school deems appropriate and reasonable. Lynne urges employers with companies in these state to reference the mandated time-off in employee handbooks and PTO/vacation policies.
