Construction and real estate litigation partner Brent Auberry spoke with the Indiana Lawyer in an article titled “Floodwaters Have Receded; Need for Legal Help Hasn’t.”
Coming after extensive flooding across Indiana in August, the article explained how many residents and property owners are still looking for assistance understanding which state and federal funding programs they qualify for and how to appeal denied applications. To help residents secure tax relief, Auberry pointed to Indiana’s general disaster and flood specific relief statutes.
Auberry said the general disaster statute will be more relevant to residents and offers a broad reassessment method for property located in a township that’s been physically destroyed by a disaster. He added that the flood-specific statute, which offers a reassessment method for properties considered permanently flooded, has a more pressing deadline of Dec. 31.
