Government and regulatory partner Mollie Sitkowski spoke with Bloomberg Law about the latest potential tariff in an article titled “Custom Brokers Await Clarity on New Trump Tariff.”
President Donald Trump’s latest tariff warning – a 25% levy on goods from countries doing business with Iran – rekindled uncertainty among importers after Trump issued a post detailing the threat on Truth Social. However, Sitkowski noted that for the levies to take effect, an official pronouncement like an executive order would need to be published citing to authority. She added that the tariff would have to instruct Customs and Border Protection (CPB) to collect tariffs on goods from certain countries, who in turn would have to revise its electronic system to issue instructions to importers.
“[Trump issued] a similar threat to purchasers of Venezuelan oil in March and even followed it up with a formal executive order,” Sitkowski added. “However, he never designated countries to be subject to the EO and the CBP never put anything in place.”
