John Przypyszny Comments on Florida’s Accreditation Moves With The Chronicle of Higher Education

The Chronicle of Higher Education

In an article for The Chronicle of Higher Education, education partner John Przypyszny discussed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ plan to form a new accreditor for public universities in southern states. The article details how Florida officials will consider funding and membership details of the new accrediting system.

Przypyszny noted that the plans still leave big issues to be resolved, in part because the Florida system seems to have an outsized role in forming and controlling the organization. Additionally, Przypyszny said the new process could further politicize the accreditation process, including through efforts to “dictate what is taught on certain issues,” “prohibit teaching of certain topics,” or “require viewpoint diversity.”

Przypyszny added that other states, regardless of “red” or “blue” status, could follow suit – a divide that would only increase the tensions in higher education, he noted.
