Libby Baney Discusses Growing Counterfeit Drug Trade in Vanity Fair

Government and regulatory partner Libby Baney recently spoke to Vanity Fair for their article “Why Counterfeit Ozempic Is a Global-Growth Industry” that reported on the rise of counterfeit drugs and the challenges faced by pharmaceutical companies and regulators in combating this global problem.

The article stated that law enforcement and Food and Drug Administration officials face obstacles such as unimplemented laws, weak laws and corrupt government officials in tackling the growing counterfeit pharmaceutical trade. 

Baney noted how these factors can create an opening for criminals to enter the counterfeit drug trade. “The good ideas are too late, they don’t keep pace with [evolving] technology, and there’s a fractured system of regulatory enforcement,” Baney explained. “All these layers of complexity create criminal opportunity.”
