Expungement Clinics a Great Chance to Provide a Second Chance

In a “Pro Bono Matters” column for The Indiana Lawyer, associates Emily Kile-Maxwell and Zena Braish detail the impact of “second chance” legislation and the need for expungement and reentry pro bono services, especially in rural areas.

The coauthors describe how many lawyers in Indiana dedicate their pro bono efforts to assisting with expungement clinics, which help eligible prior offenders seal certain arrest and conviction records. They also share examples of organizations providing reentry assistance, including applications for driver’s license reinstatement.
