Lynne Anderson Speaks with SHRM about How Employers Should Communicate Layoffs

Labor and employment partner Lynne Anne Anderson was quoted in the article, “How Do You Handle More Layoffs?” published by The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) on August 14, 2020. The article outlines steps for employers to limit the damage and avert potential liability during a reduction in force. Anderson notes that as employers face the difficult decision, they should focus on the scope of layoffs at the outset, including which units will be affected, and explain the selection criteria to employees. In regard to the selection criteria, Anderson recommends involving an attorney so the selections are part of a conversation protected by the attorney-client privilege.
