Angela Johnson Helps Employers Prepare for ‘Ban the Box' Compliance

President Obama’s executive order “banning the box” for those seeking positions in the federal government continues the trend of employers delaying consideration of criminal history until later in the hiring process. Angela Johnson, associate in Faegre Baker Daniels’ labor and employment practice, told Human Resources News that employers now subject to “ban the box” laws should review their hiring policies to ensure compliance. Johnson emphasized the need for management and HR personnel to know the scope and specifications of the laws dictating their hiring practices to avoid “prohibited inquiries” about applicants’ criminal history.
