In January, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released proposed regulations under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) that are sure to have an impact on food growers and producers. Sarah Brew and Courtney Lawrence of Faegre Baker Daniels authored an article appearing in Food Quality & Safety Magazine explaining how the new rules are part of an FDA plan to shift the focus of food safety from reactive to preventive. The new rules include revisions to the existing Current Good Manufacturing Practice, the addition of preventive controls, and the establishment of minimum safety standards for the production and harvesting of fruits and vegetables on farms.
