The Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator (IPEC) hosted a meeting at the White House with domain name registrars (DNRs) and senior U.S. government officials to discuss voluntary solutions to address the illegal sale of counterfeit non-controlled prescription medications online, www.safeonlinerx.com reported in its story, "ASOP Applauds IPEC Efforts to Combat Illegal Online Drug Sellers."
The Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies (ASOP) applauds IPEC for recognizing the risks to public health that arise from illegal online drug sellers, the story said.
"We are thrilled that the White House is actively engaged in looking for solutions to this serious patient safety issue," said Libby Baney, an advisor at B&D Consulting who counsels ASOP.
A recent report by the National Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) found that of the 7000-plus websites NABP reviewed, approximately 96 percent of them were operating in violation of state, federal and/or NABP patient safety and pharmacy practice standards, and 84 percent of the sites did not require a valid prescription, www.safeonlinerx.com reported.
The ASOP represents a broad coalition of stakeholders who seek to protect patient safety and ensure patient access to safe and legitimate online pharmacies.
