IP and the Comic Book Superhero
Overview
Janet Fries, Of Counsel to the Washington, DC, office, spoke at the American Bar Association’s IP and the Comic Book Superhero CLE Program on Friday, April 26 via live webinar and teleconference.
The program explored several current IP topics through the lens of superheroes and comic books. Janet discussed why custom carmakers are prohibited from making replicas of the Batmobile and the latest in the 65-year battle for copyrights in Superman.
Janet used cases involving Batman, Superman and other superheroes to explain the scope of copyright protection, including the categories of copyrightable subject matter, and some of the hurdles that must be overcome in order to exercise statutory rights to terminate transfers of copyrights.
The program will be presented again as an in-person panel discussion at the ABA annual conference in San Francisco in August.
