Photography and The Law

Overview

Washington, DC of counsel Janet Fries will speak at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) DC program titled “Photography and The Law” on May 20, 2019, in Washington, DC. Janet is also an adjunct professor at The George Washington University School of Law, a member of the adjunct faculty at American University Washington College of Law, and a professional editorial and fine art photographer.

The panel will focus on how amateur or professional photographers can navigate guidelines and regulations when documenting and sharing their work. The speakers also will discuss their experience with photographers’ rights, ethics, and the legal aspects of freedom of expression in the current culture of photography.

In addition to Janet, the panel will include:

  • Philip Brookman, Consulting Curator for the Department of Photography at the National Gallery of Art (moderator)
  • Joshua J. Kaufman, partner and chair of Copyright and Licensing at Venable, LLP; general counsel and a founder of the Art Copyright Coalition; author, contributor and was an adjunct professor at American University Law School
  • Joshua Yospyn, freelance editorial and commercial photographer featured in The New York Times and The Washington Post, instructor, and former photojournalist.

The program is presented in association with the #iseeDC2019 exhibition, which is on view until June 7, 2019.
