Blockchain & IP


Chicago partner Ken Dort spoke at the 2019 ABA-IPL Annual Meeting and Intellectual Property Law Conference on April 10−12, 2019, in Arlington, Virginia. Ken joined the panel titled “Blockchain and IP” on April 12.


The panel discussed possible applications (use cases) as well as the limitations for blockchain technology. Applications included those that might protect various forms of intellectual property; examples discussed were a new registry for copyright licensing and proposed land use registries now under consideration. The panel also assessed systems implementing the Internet of Things and supporting supply chain record keeping. Other speakers were Samantha Kappagoda, Numerati Partners LLC and RiskEcon Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and Robert Kasunic, Associate Register of Copyrights and Director of Registration Policy & Practice, U.S. Copyright Office.
