Plan Document Dilemmas: Dealing with the New Paradigm

Los Angles partner Heather Abrigo spoke at the Western Benefits Conference in Anaheim on July 11.

Heather presented a two-part workshop with Rich Hochman of Retirement Plan Consulting Services and Robert Richter of FIS Relius. The first part, “Plan Document Dilemmas: Dealing with the New Paradigm,” covered the latest developments affecting individually designed and pre-approved plan documents, with a focus on the IRS determination letter programs.

The second part of the workshop discussed strategies for choosing plan documents, the availability of “reliance,” potential liability risks for plan sponsors and their advisers, and what to expect from the IRS during examinations.

The annual conference is hosted by the Western Pension & Benefits Council and the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA). Heather serves on the steering committee for the conference and has served as chair of ASPPA’s national conferences since 2016.
