Breaking Immigration News: Travel Ban 3.0 Released, New Countries Targeted

On September 24, 2017, President Trump issued Travel Ban 3.0 restricting travel to the United States from eight countries, including five that were subject to the previous travel ban. This new travel ban was issued as the last travel ban was expiring, and it subjects nationals of Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen and Somalia to travel restrictions. The countries of Chad, North Korea and Venezuela are new to the travel ban list. Sudan was initially listed and has been taken off of the new travel ban list.

The new travel ban institutes different travel restrictions for different countries. This is different from the initial ban where the same travel restrictions covered all countries and all types of travelers (nonimmigrants, immigrants, etc.). Additionally, the new travel ban is effective at different times. Those foreign nationals who were subjected to the last travel ban (Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen and Somalia) were subjected to the new travel ban immediately (Sunday, September 24 at 3:30 EDT). Those countries not covered previously (Chad, North Korea and Venezuela) will have the travel restrictions imposed as of 12:01 EDT on October 18, 2017.

Please stay tuned for further updates on Travel Ban 3.0 as more information is released by the government and as the U.S. Supreme Court hears oral arguments on the initial travel ban, slated for October 10, 2017. More analysis on the new travel ban will also be covered during our "Hot Topics in Business Immigration" webinar scheduled for Thursday, September 28, 2017.
