The Current Challenges in Constantly Changing State and Local Taxation (SALT)

Overview

Kaitlin McKenzie moderated a podcast on state and local taxation (SALT) with Keith Fleury, assistant professor in taxation at Goldey-Beacom College, and Jonathan Liss, senior revenue policy analyst for the City of Philadelphia and adjunct tax professor at Villanova University and Drexel University.

The conversation tackled a number of issues, including:

  • The lack of uniformity among taxes collected by states and localities, and the challenge this brings to being an educated taxpayer
  • Current trends in state legislative proposals to impose new taxes, such as digital advertising services and taxes on wealthy individuals
  • The difficulties for corporations that grow and become multistate with inadequate planning in place for state and local taxes
  • The effects of the Multistate Tax Commission’s (MTC) recently updated interpretation of Public Law 86-272 to address internet activity
  • The areas in which uniformity in state tax laws might be desirable
