Health providers – Propose changes rather than have them imposed on you

In a new installment of Becker’s Hospital Review, District Policy Group President Ilisa Halpern Paul discusses the rapidly changing world of health care in the United States. Considering the effects of the Affordable Care Act, the aging Baby Boomer population, and the consumer push for technology-savvy health systems, health care is undergoing a transformation unlike any other industry in America, and it demands input from providers, patients, and policymakers alike. This is particularly pertinent when determining funding for health care, and Ilisa suggests that policymakers ought to be seen as a catalyst for the changes the health care system needs. As she writes, “Think about your patients from the payers’ perspective: what could or should you be doing differently to care for the patients for whom Uncle Sam pays the bill?...Bring those ideas and solutions to policymakers. And don’t be shy about asking for funding or a waiver from requirements or proposing a pilot to study a new approach. Members of Congress might not be legislating a lot these days but they all have relationships with federal agencies and are eager to advance good ideas before regulatory bodies.”
