A group of law students and professors from the Faculdades Espirito Santenses Law School in Vitoria, Brazil, visited Baker & Daniels' Indianapolis office in September as part of the third annual Program in American Law sponsored by Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis, the school reported in the article, "Professor Tom Wilson Leads Brazilian Program," on its website.
Brita Horvath, a 2002 graduate of the IU-Indianapolis School of Law and manager of diversity and pro bono at Baker & Daniels, spoke to the group about the pro bono and civic engagement activities of Indiana lawyers and about specific initiatives the firm has developed in which its lawyers are involved.
Founded and led by Tom Wilson, an IU-Indy professor, the Program in American Law includes a week of classroom instruction and field trips. In 2011, the subject of the program was "The Common Law in Principles and Practice," allowing participants to gain better understanding of the common law and compare it to Brazilian civil law, the IU-Indy website explained.
During the trip, participants also met with two justices of the United States District Court, an Indiana Supreme Court justice, two Indiana state senators, the Indiana attorney general and Wabash College students studying the culture and social issues of Brazil.
