An Examination of Changes to the U.S. Patent System and Impacts on America’s Small Businesses

Overview

Washington, D.C. partner and co-chair of the IP Group Bob Stoll participated in a hearing organized by the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship to examine the impact of recent changes in patent law, and to raise concern about legislation aimed at cracking down on abusive patent litigation.  Bob testified at the hearing, speaking to the panel about the difficulty small businesses with patents face under threat by recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions such as Alice.  He noted that the Supreme Court intended for the Alice decision to be applied narrowly, but large numbers of invalidity decisions have limited the availability of patents in core technologies such as software and personalized medicine.
