Midwest Rural Hospital Provider Compensation Survey
The 2021 rollercoaster has come to an end. In the beginning of the year, we experienced peak COVID-19 infection levels, followed by the hope of vaccines in the spring. The summer of 2021 offered a temporary reprieve from the pandemic, only to be followed by a return to near peak infection levels due to highly contagious variants of the disease in the fall and winter. Nowhere has this rollercoaster been felt more acutely than in the Midwest.
In terms of provider compensation and productivity, the impact of the 2021 rollercoaster is unclear. While there have been no cessations of electives in 2021, the return of high infection rates has likely prevented production from returning to pre-pandemic levels. But other factors in 2021 are likely to have had an impact on rural hospital provider compensation as well. For example, we’ve experienced some of the highest inflation rates in decades over the last year. And CMS’s implementation of some of the most significant changes to E/M coding, including the largest increases to wRVU weighting of office visits in the last 30 years, are likely to frustrate year-over-year comparisons.
At the same time, rural hospitals continue to struggle to recruit and retain providers. Compounding this issue is the scarcity of provider compensation market data in the rural setting. This gap can lead to lower recruitment yields, retention issues and inaccuracies in fair market value/commercial reasonability analysis.
The Faegre Drinker Midwest Rural Hospital Provider Compensation Survey helps to bridge this gap. By participating in our survey, you can help us gather the data needed to create fact-based strategies that address provider recruitment and retention issues in the rural setting.
Participants in the survey will receive the results for free.
The survey requests data on the topics below. (Please provide as much information as you can but note that we need at least some physician level compensation data to accept the submission.):
- Hospital demographics
- Provider retention data, including turnover percent and days to fill
- Provider benefits data, including FTEs for full-time benefits, retirement match, CME and PTO days
- Physician compensation, including salary vs. incentive compensation, administrative and medical directorship pay, and call coverage pay
- Compensation for advanced practice providers, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants and certified nurse anesthetists
- Provider productivity as measured by visits, work relative value units, collections and clinical hours
