Jim Volling Named 2019 ‘Icon’ Honoree by Minnesota Lawyer/Finance & Commerce

Jim Volling, Faegre Baker Daniels partner, has been named a 2019 ‘Icon’ by Minnesota Lawyer and Finance & Commerce.

The awards, issued by both publications, recognize business and legal professionals over the age of 60, who have a long track record of successes over the course of their respective careers. In addition to professional accomplishments, a panel of judges also examines community service by nominees.

Volling is a commercial litigator who puts decades of experience, a U.S. Supreme Court clerkship, and client commitment to work for businesses. He has represented corporate clients in complex commercial disputes valued up to several billion dollars and has represented both individuals and institutions in white-collar criminal matters and investigations.

During his extensive career, Volling has also provided post-conviction counsel to several death-row inmates. He was one of the founders of the Death Penalty Defense Project—serving as chair of the project’s Steering Committee. In this capacity, he recruited and trained teams of Minnesota lawyers to represent death row inmates in the southern U.S.

Volling also worked to establish FaegreBD’s ‘JUSTice for KIDS’ initiative to assist abused and neglected children, and he has represented guardians ad litem in foster care cases. In 2017, Volling became the lead attorney for the plaintiffs in a class action case filed in federal court against Hennepin County and the Minnesota Commissioner of Human Services—challenging on constitutional grounds, the county’s child protection system. The case has now been settled with the defendants agreeing to institute important systemic reforms.

Volling continues to serve with many other community organizations and initiatives, such as the Minnesota Collaborative Justice Project on prisoner reentry, and frequently engages in pro bono representation, thereby providing his high-powered legal acumen free-of-charge to clients who are in desperate need of legal help.

Volling and other Icon honorees will be recognized at an awards ceremony on Dec. 11 at the Hyatt in downtown Minneapolis.
