Robert Stoll Quoted in Law360 Regarding Proposal to Make USPTO an Independent Agency

Robert Stoll, Washington, D.C., partner and co-chair of the Intellectual Property Group, was quoted in a Law360 article titled “Independence May Help USPTO Better Control Budget.” The article discussed the House Budget Committee’s recent budget resolution that included a proposal to separate the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office from the Department of Commerce and make it an independent agency. Proponents argue that independence would give the office better control over its budget and potentially lead to better patents.

Robert stated that the USPTO, if independent from the Department of Commerce, would be able to be a stronger advocate for intellectual property owners, and added that “It would give an independent voice at the table where policy is made, not one that's been subsumed within the Department of Commerce.”
