Ed Bryant Recognized by American Board of Medical Specialties

Former Drinker Biddle partner Ed Bryant recently received the American Board of Medical Specialties’ 2012 Distinguished Service Award for his leadership within the organization.

Bryant, who founded the first health care practice within a Chicago law firm in 1979, has guided ABMS through organizational and strategic changes over the past 10 years.

He has helped restructure the ABMS governance body, draft bylaws for a new Board of Directors and assist the organization in meeting new reporting requirements implemented by the IRS. Bryant has also worked with ABMS to increase its membership and develop strategic plans.

Referred to as “one of the fathers of health care law,” Bryant founded and chaired the health care practice at Gardner Carton & Douglas, a legacy firm of Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP. He was known nationally for his work on corporate restructurings, mergers & acquisitions and joint ventures. He personally participated in more than 350 such transactions over the course of his career.

Bryant also dedicated much of his time to teaching and counseling lawyers, including as a professor of health law at Loyola University of Chicago School of Law from 1985 to 1992.

Bryant received both his bachelor's degree in journalism in 1963 and his Juris Doctor in 1967 from Northwestern University.

The American Board of Medical Specialties, a not-for-profit organization, was established in 1933 to create uniformity in physician certification and to increase public awareness of the value of specialty certification.
