NECTC Takes Energy, Technology and Environmental Counsel to a New Level

In a new energy economy, the energy, clean technology and climate (NECTC) team will meet rapidly changing legal needs of businesses

Minneapolis (10-November-2009)Faegre & Benson LLP is pleased to announce a new service offering which aims to anticipate and mitigate the legal risks associated with a rapidly changing regulatory environment and the "new energy economy."

More than 50 attorneys from the Boulder, Denver, Des Moines, Minneapolis, Shanghai and London offices will collaborate to provide services in the new energy, clean technology and climate sectors, called the NECTC team.

The firm will serve businesses developing solutions and new environmental technologies in the "new energy economy." The firm will advise a broad range of businesses facing new regulatory mandates arising from energy and climate change legislation.

"With experience in virtually every segment of a new carbon economy, our firm offers an integrated approach and a new level of service that moves beyond most anything offered by other law firms," said James R. Spaanstra, partner and chair of NECTC.

Comprehensive services are provided to clients in the following areas of practice:

New Energy. The new energy team addresses the new needs of energy companies including compliance with rapidly evolving state and federal environmental regulations and renewable energy mandates. The team provides counsel regarding environmental and natural resources; real estate and land use; eminent domain and corridor acquisition; corporate governance; capital raising; commercial transactions; construction contracts, regulations and liability issues; intellectual property protection; and litigation of commercial, construction, energy, environmental and federal lands claims.

Clean Technology. Lawyers on the clean technology team address the unique legal needs of companies operating in the clean technology sector. They collaborate with clients in the business of increasing energy efficiency, reducing waste and mitigating the environmental impact of energy development, population growth and industrial practices.

Climate. The climate team addresses regulatory compliance matters, climate-related litigation claims and climate-related corporate governance and securities disclosure issues. Faegre & Benson attorneys also provide counsel regarding U.S. and international "cap and trade" systems, carbon offset projects and financing for carbon-reduction and sequestration technologies.

"Sooner or later, virtually all of our clients will be wrestling with one aspect or another of their energy needs," Spaanstra adds. "They will be developing, using, managing or responding to clean technology. They will be revising their business models around the pressures of climate change and sustainability—aligning supply chains to deliver sustainable products. Our NECTC group delivers the legal services they will need to do all of this."
