Baker & Daniels' Fred Glass Chosen Indiana University Athletic Director

Fred Glass, a partner at Baker & Daniels LLP and the architect behind helping Indianapolis land the Super Bowl and broker a deal making the city a part of the permanent rotation to host NCAA Final Fours, has accepted the athletic director position at Indiana University.

The announcement comes three months after Jack Swarbrick, also a Baker & Daniels partner, was named athletic director at the University of Notre Dame.

"Fred's contributions to our community and our law firm are extraordinary," said Tom Froehle, chair and chief executive partner at Baker & Daniels. "While Baker & Daniels is again saddened to lose such an excellent partner and colleague, Fred will be an outstanding athletic director at IU. I had the good fortune of working closely with Fred and know that he will bring energy, enthusiasm and passion to this new position. He has great administrative and team building skills, always demonstrates excellent judgment and has the proven ability to overcome significant obstacles to achieve results. He is a man of integrity and character and will be a great leader for Indiana University athletics."

Said Glass, "While I'm extremely honored and thrilled to be returning to my alma mater, I am more than a bit saddened to be leaving a premier law firm and outstanding colleagues. But our friendships will continue, and I look forward to this new chapter in my career."

Glass, who received his bachelor's degree from IU-Bloomington in 1981 and law degree cum laude from IU-Indianapolis School of Law in 1984, has practiced law at Baker & Daniels since 1993. He has been equally active and effective in his athletic, community, political and volunteer involvement. From 2000 to 2007, Glass was president of the Marion County Capital Improvement Board which owns and is responsible for the operation of the Indiana Convention Center, Lucas Oil Stadium (and formerly the RCA Dome), Conseco Fieldhouse and Victory Field. During his tenure, he was instrumental in putting together the strategy and plans for development of Lucas Oil Stadium, a new multi-use facility that would be the long-term home of the Indianapolis Colts and allow the expansion of the Indiana Convention Center.

Glass was president of the Indianapolis 2011 Super Bowl Bid Committee and on the Board of Directors for the Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Bureau from 2000-07. He also has served on the local organizing committee for NCAA men's and women's Final Four basketball tournaments and Big Ten men's and women's basketball tournaments played in Indianapolis since 2000.

Glass has been recognized repeatedly for both his legal skills and public service, including receiving the Charles L. Whistler Award in 2005. The award is the most prestigious honor bestowed by the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee to honor individuals who reflect passion and skill for making public-private partnerships work for the betterment of the community. The award is named in memory of Charles L. Whistler, a partner at Baker & Daniels until his unexpected death in 1981.

In his legal practice, Glass has provided counsel on business and other legal issues, public policy matters and strategy development to help his clients get things done. His clients included both emerging and established businesses, as well as individuals, trade associations and their members, tax-exempt organizations, and governmental and quasi-governmental entities. Glass has been named to The Best Lawyers in America for corporate law and Indiana Super Lawyers for business and corporate law.

Before joining Baker & Daniels, Glass served Indiana Governor Evan Bayh from 1989 through mid-1993, the last 2½ years as Chief of Staff. He served as a law clerk for U.S. District Court Judge S. Hugh Dillin from 1984-86. Glass was Transition Team Chairman for Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson in 1999-2000 and Indiana Lieutenant Governor Kathy Davis in 2003-2004. He was also the Indiana Chairman for the Clinton/Gore '96 presidential campaign.

Glass was born and raised in Indianapolis, graduating with honors from Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in 1977. He and his wife, Barbara, have four children — Katie, 22; Joey, 20; Connor, 16; and George, 13.
