United Way Recognizes Baker & Daniels as 2006 Breakthrough Campaign

Baker & Daniels LLP employees responded with a "breakthrough" United Way campaign this year.

The United Way of Central Indiana recognized the Indianapolis-based law firm as one of the "2006 Breakthrough Campaigns." The distinction goes to companies and organizations raising $30,000 or more or raising 30 percent more than the previous year. Baker & Daniels, which also had a "Breakthrough Campaign" last year, received a "Company that Cares" Award for the fourth straight year.

"We set an aggressive goal, and we reached it," Dan Lechleiter and Katie Wiley, attorneys at Baker & Daniels and co-chairs of the firm's campaign, said in a joint announcement. "United Way is the best way to help the whole community. With co-workers' support and generosity, Baker & Daniels can make a lasting impact on the lives of many people. Every gift was important."

With more than 250 employees in two Indianapolis offices pledging contributions to the United Way of Central Indiana, Baker & Daniels increased its percentage of individual participation again this year. More than 50 employees qualified for the Key Club, which requires a gift of $1,000 or more.

Partners, associates, management and administrative staff pledged $165,000 in Baker & Daniels' two Indianapolis offices. The total is expected to improve on being the 40th largest campaign among more than 1,200 Central Indiana companies and organizations that ran a campaign in 2005. Baker & Daniels' summer associates also contributed to the United Way campaign, raising $5,680 for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Indianapolis during a field day competition with summer associates at three other law firms.

Baker & Daniels employees in the firm's Fort Wayne, South Bend and Elkhart offices also conduct United Way campaigns.

With some companies in the final stages of their campaign, the United Way of Central Indiana is closing in on its goal to raise $37.5 million. A Lilly Endowment grant covers most of the United Way's operating costs, allowing at least 92 percent of all contributions to go directly to helping people in Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Marion and Morgan counties.
