Charming Shoppes Deal Named Top Acquisition by The M&A Advisor

The sale of Charming Shoppes Inc. to Ascena Retail Group Inc. was named winner of the Corporate/Strategic Acquisition of the Year (Over $500mm) in the 11th Annual M&A Advisor Awards.

The Drinker Biddle team, led by Philadelphia partner Doug Raymond, served as lead deal counsel for Charming Shoppes — the parent company of retail brands Lane Bryant, Catherines Plus Sizes and Fashion Bug — in the $890 million sale.

Assisting Doug were partners Bob Juelke, Dave Denious and Troy Calkins, and associates Laura Hemm, Adam Weinstock and Lauren Platko. Many other attorneys from the Corporate Group, as well as the tax, finance, employee benefits, intellectual property and environmental groups also contributed to the effort.

The deal was also a finalist in both the M&A Deal of the Year (Between $500mm and $1 Billion) and Consumer and Retail Products (Over $500mm) categories.
