Edwin A. Getz

Ed is a partner in the firm’s Chicago office in the Intellectual Property Practice Group. Ed is the Regional Partner in Charge of the Chicago office, a member of the firm’s Allocation’s Committee and a member of the firm’s Alumni Advisory Committee.

Ed’s Practice: Ed regularly counsels clients in the area of intellectual property and information technology law and has extensive experience representing clients in acquiring, developing and licensing innovation and information technology assets, software and databases, and in the distribution and sourcing of products and services via the Internet. He has considerable experience in intellectual property and information technology litigation and dispute resolution. Ed develops enforcement strategies for clients with large IP portfolios and regularly conducts investigations regarding the misappropriation of property rights. He also concentrates on negotiating complex technology transfer and joint venture arrangements, technology development and distribution agreements, and outsourcing agreements.

Ed enjoys representing both new technology companies and well-established companies that are using technology and information in innovative ways. He counsels a diverse array of businesses in the hi-tech, aviation, education, health care, financial services, entertainment, transportation and consumer products industries.

In General: Ed received his B.A. degree from Carleton College and his M.B.A. from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management. He is a graduate of the Washington University School of Law.

Ed is the recipient of the Lexology Client Choice Award 2013 in the category of Information Technology. He has also been chosen for inclusion among the 2013 Illinois Super Lawyers, a recognition for lawyers who exhibit excellence in their practices.

Personal Information: Ed lives in Evanston, IL with his wife and youngest daughter. Ed’s eldest daughter is a junior attending American University in Washington, D.C and his middle daughter is a freshman attending Washington University in St. Louis. Ed enjoys running on week-ends, playing tennis, biking to work, and is a sports enthusiast.
