Kathy Osborn Chosen in "Mother of Invention" Competition
The mobile, designed by Osborn, is compatible with MP3 players and other digital musical devices, allowing parents to choose the music their child hears. As a second prize winner, Whirlpool home appliances awards a $5,000 grant to Osborn to put her idea into the hands of consumers across the country, a Whirlpool brand washer and dryer, and a two-day business boot camp to gain guidance from Whirlpool brand experts on product development, business strategy, legal issues and marketing.
Whirlpool brand selected five winners among nearly 1,700 submissions. The contest was created to help moms realize their potential with breakthrough innovations by providing necessary business resources, including seed money and expert advice. The winners have patents or patents pending.
Grand prize winner Mary Anne Amato of Lido Beach, N.Y., designed a Quick Change Crib which allows parents to change crib sheets without lifting the mattress or removing the bumpers. Amato received a $20,000 grant from Whirlpool, the world's leading manufacturer of major home appliances.
At Baker & Daniels, Osborn practices in commercial and appellate litigation where she represents clients in state and federal courts in a broad range of areas, including antitrust; appellate; estate, probate and trusts; product liability; administrative procedures; contracts; and torts. She joined the firm in 2000.
Before becoming a lawyer, Osborn worked 11 years for Indiana University's Institute for Disability and Community. She secured grants, managed systems change efforts, conducted research and training on organized change and inclusion, and supported schools and community organizations to include people with disabilities.
Osborn is a member of the Indiana Protection and Advocacy Commission and a past president of the Youth Job Preparedness Program and the Indiana Association for Persons in Supported Employment. She is a former recipient of the Big Sister of the Year Award by Big Brothers/Big Sisters of South Central Indiana.
