Cybersecurity Laws in the U.S. and U.K.

Legislative actions in the U.S. and the U.K. indicate that lawmakers in both countries consider cybersecurity a top national security priority. Kathleen Rice, Faegre Baker Daniels counsel, and Huw Beverley-Smith, partner in the firm’s London office, considered these recent legislative efforts from both sides of the Atlantic in an article they co-authored in Solicitors Journal. The article focused on the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (CISA), recently passed in the U.S. Senate, and the Investigatory Powers Bill (IBP), a draft bill published in November currently under consideration in the British Parliament.

“New laws, like CISA and the IPB, can bring clarity to the ongoing cyber debate,” the article said. “How companies, individuals, and governments ultimately respond remains to be seen."
