What We Offer

Engaging work and supportive mentors make Faegre Drinker an ideal first – and hopefully last – place for law students to work. Beginning with our summer associate program, we provide support and training to help law students and new lawyers build the skills and behaviors to grow a sophisticated legal practice and develop rewarding client relationships.

Who We’re Seeking

Law students who have strong academic records, entrepreneurial spirits, diverse perspectives and collaborative mindsets will find opportunities to succeed and eventually develop into successful partners or long-term contributors with national reputations.

How You’ll Grow

Summer associates receive a hands-on, meaningful experience. We encourage your growth with challenging work, intensive professional development programs, personalized mentoring and coaching, and respectful yet candid feedback. You’ll be able to participate in pro bono work and connect with peers and our lawyers throughout the summer.

When and Where to Join Us

Our summer program will begin in June and is available in many of our U.S. offices. Programs include our Chicago, Dallas, Des Moines, Denver, Florham Park, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., offices. Our needs in each office vary so please be sure to check out our job openings for a list of offices seeking summer associates for this coming summer.

Career Development

Your legal career begins as a summer associate – and we provide the support to help you progress to an associate position and beyond. When you join Faegre Drinker, you will have the connections and information you need to succeed.

Jumpstarting Your Practice

New associates participate in a firmwide orientation program to integrate into the firm and understand law firm life. In addition to covering benefits and technology, we hold interactive programs and panel discussions on topics such as the basics of lawyering and working with support professionals, so you can hit the ground running.

Building Your Career

We provide training on topics critical to success in today’s legal environment, including:
  • Practice and technical skill proficiency
  • Development of behavioral competencies
  • Understanding the business of operating a law firm
  • Business development
  • Client service

Mentoring for Success

We connect each associate with an advisor who focuses on career development and planning. Associates actively participate in their career planning by communicating practice goals and objectives. By collaborating closely with senior lawyers on legal work, associates experience valuable coaching.

Growing Through Feedback

Associates receive ongoing feedback from supervising lawyers so they can continually improve. Through our formal evaluation process, new lawyers are evaluated mid-year during their first year, and all lawyers are reviewed annually. Evaluations include a self-assessment, individual and group evaluations, and an in-person evaluation meeting with the lawyer's practice group.

Community

Diversity & Inclusion

At Faegre Drinker, we promote a culture of diversity and inclusion. Through our commitment to progress and innovation on diversity and inclusion, Faegre Drinker is equipped to better understand the needs and objectives of our clients and communities. And by promoting the perspectives of professionals that span all dimensions of diversity, we create an inclusive workplace for our employees that helps address underrepresentation in the legal profession and fosters an environment of creativity, innovation and mutual respect.

Connected to the Community

Pro bono is part of who we are and what we do at Faegre Drinker, every day. Throughout our history, Faegre Drinker attorneys and staff have fought for the causes that appeal to their sense of justice and are important to our communities. Since 2015, we have devoted more than 230,000 hours to pro bono work, providing legal counsel, courtroom advocacy and skilled representation to a host of pro bono causes and clients.

Commitment to Justice & Equity

Together, we provided nearly 65,000 hours of pro bono service last year, working to ensure access to justice for all and making a positive difference in our communities.

Law firms are uniquely positioned to analyze and advocate to change laws and policies encouraging, perpetuating or allowing racial injustice, and much of our pro bono practice indirectly addresses the consequences of structural racism.

  • Reentry and second chances
  • Housing

Collaborative Environment

"After two summers with Faegre Drinker’s Denver office, I knew there was no better firm in which to begin my legal career. The Recruiting team’s intentional planning and inclusion of staff and attorneys in the summer program made my two summers a phenomenal experience. The Faegre Drinker team ensured that summer associates felt connected with staff and attorneys through social events, observational opportunities, practice group meeting inclusion, and the like. I especially appreciated the built-in summer associate advisors, mentors, and work coordinators who were always willing to lend a helping hand and support the summer associates through the program. Overall, I will forever hold my Faegre Drinker summer associate experience near and dear to my heart, and I cannot wait to join the fantastic Denver office upon graduation and bar exam passage."

Jared Black

Exposure to Many Areas of Law

"As a summer associate at Faegre Drinker, I was able to gain substantive work experience from a wide range of practice areas. The summer associates were supported by work coordinators who ensured that we had manageable workloads and were able to explore our interests. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the recruitment team went out of its way to provide safe social events which gave the summer associates excellent opportunities to get to know the attorneys in the office. By the end of the program, I felt at home both in terms of the culture of the firm and the nature of the work that I will be doing as a first year associate."

Jared Black, 2021 (Northwestern Pritzker School of Law), Chicago Office

Josh DeAmicis

Challenging Work

"Almost from the beginning as a Faegre Drinker summer associate, I was able to dive into challenging and meaningful work with my practice group. Faegre Drinker provided me a chance to make a significant contribution on real cases and for real clients, while also walking me through the purpose behind the specific projects I was given. Importantly, the firm’s partners, associates, and support staff also provided a helping hand if I hit any hurdles along the way. By assigning me impactful, challenging, and real-life work, the summer program left me feeling comfortable and confident about my future as an associate who is capable of producing good work product for partners, senior associates, and, ultimately, clients."

Diversity & Inclusion

"As a diverse summer associate, Faegre Drinker went above and beyond to make me feel welcomed, comfortable, and heard. During the few months I worked as a summer associate with Faegre, it was clear that the firm recognizes and commends the unique perspectives that diverse attorneys bring to the table, both in the law and the community. Additionally, Faegre Drinker’s Diversity and Inclusion group was actively involved with the summer class and was dedicated to listening to the diverse summer associates’ ideas and experiences. The D&I group was committed to helping us succeed in our careers by providing us with the resources to reach our leadership goals. Faegre Drinker has allowed me, as a woman from a diverse background and an upcoming first year associate, to feel confident that my voice will be heard and valued."

Hands-On Training & Experience

"Working at Faegre Drinker during my 1L and 2L summers allowed me to apply the skills taught in law school in a practical and real-world way. With the rote demeanor of law school, having the ability to apply what we learn to a hands-on legal position helps magnify what you should be gaining out of your legal education. My experience at Faegre Drinker helped clarify my strengths and areas to improve to bolster my legal career. The Faegre Drinker summer program is also set apart by the supportive and engaging community fostered by associates in their first few years up to managing partners."

Jamison Whiting, 2020/2021 (University of California, Irvine School of Law), Minneapolis Office

Professional & Personal Development

"My summers with Faegre Drinker afforded me so many wonderful experiences. Chiefly, I had the opportunity to experience firsthand what life is like when you work in a big, collaborative firm. The associates and partners I worked for were interested not only in me as a summer associate but as a future colleague. Those people treated me as a colleague, gave me thoughtful feedback, and truly cared about my development. Additionally, I had a lot of fun. Faegre Drinker places a strong emphasis on building professional relationships and camaraderie via social events like Phillies games, softball games, and firm meals. These events allowed me to build relationships with some wonderful colleagues and instilled in me the confidence necessary to build my network. I will carry these summer experiences with me as I start my career as a first year associate in Philadelphia with Faegre Drinker."

Jillian Brennan, 2020/2021 (Villanova University School of Law), Philadelphia Office

Evaluations & Feedback

"Faegre Drinker has a reputation for delivering the best possible results to clients, which starts with the firm’s commitment to investing in its upcoming talent. I received some of the best early legal training as a summer associate at Faegre Drinker during my 1L and 2L summers. I worked on live client matters and learned about the complex issues our clients face. I shadowed attorneys in various practice groups to find my fit and received timely feedback on all the projects I submitted to the attorneys. The professionals here want you to learn and succeed, and that is what I cherished so much during my summers with the firm and now as an associate."
