Overview
Mason Medeiros provides strategic guidance to clients as they navigate the legal and regulatory complexities of the insurance industry. His primary focus is the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, and how to help clients stay ahead of regulatory changes to maintain compliance.
Artificial Intelligence
Mason assists insurance companies with developing, implementing and refining their AI and external consumer information sources (ECDIS) governance and risk management programs. He provides strategic guidance on companies’ use of AI, helping them implement the structures and procedures needed to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape and ensure safe, effective deployment. This experience has included:
- Drafting, reviewing and revising companies’ AI and ECDIS governance framework
- Formation of AI governance committees
- Participating in AI governance committee meetings to provide updates on regulatory developments and advice on AI and ECDIS use cases
- Drafting policies for employee use of AI and ECDIS
In addition to providing guidance, Mason speaks regularly on AI governance best practices and developing issues in the insurance and life sciences space.
Pharmacy & PBMs
Mason counsels pharmacy and PBM clients on regulatory and transactional issues and helps them to navigate regulatory hurdles to ensure compliance with state laws while promoting business goals. He provides assistance throughout strategic transactions and reorganizations of pharmacies and PBMs, including with pre- and post-closing regulating filings and licensing issues. He has helped pharmacy clients ensure that all filings are completed properly and in a timely manner — including with respect to Medicare and Medicaid — to prevent gaps in service following a transaction.
Insurance Regulatory Counseling
By staying updated on business developments and emerging legal issues in the insurance industry, Mason is well positioned to provide regulatory and strategic support to insurance industry clients. He assists in advising on matters related to product design, distribution and state insurance compliance, and has experience supporting responses to inquiries and investigations by state insurance departments and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). With growing experience in related areas such as state annual filings compliance, change of control filings and long-term insurance, Mason helps deliver practical, business-focused solutions tailored to each client’s goals.
Prior Experience
Mason spent two years as a summer associate with Faegre Drinker, supporting attorneys in the firm’s insurance, product liability and mass tort, and labor and employment groups. Mason also served as student director of the University of Minnesota Law School’s Insurance Law Clinic, where he led a group of student attorneys working under supervising attorneys to represent clients in all stages of insurance litigation claims.
Personal Interests
Mason enjoys baking, attending live music events, and spending time with his dog, Toast.
