Scott Angelo and Jennifer Fowler Share Insights on New Lawyer Skills in the AI Era in The National Law Review

Chief technology and innovation officer Scott Angelo and chief talent officer Jennifer Fowler were featured in a National Law Review article examining how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the skills and training required for new lawyers entering the profession.

In the article, “What Top Law Firms Say New Lawyers Need in the AI Era,” leaders from law firms highlight how AI is influencing legal education, early-career development, and the skills that will define successful attorneys.

Fowler and Angelo shared that, while AI is increasingly integrated into legal practice, foundational legal skills remain essential. “Sound judgment and legal analysis remain fundamental,” Fowler explained. “AI can assist with certain tasks, but it does not replace the need for lawyers with good judgment, a commitment to excellence, and strong relationship skills.”

Angelo noted how AI can allow lawyers to spend more time on client-facing and advisory work. “AI has the potential to improve efficiency and consistency in certain types of work, which can allow lawyers to spend more time on higher-value activities such as advising clients and addressing complex issues,” he said.

The article further highlights the need for greater AI literacy in legal education, encouraging law schools to prepare students with both traditional legal training and a working understanding of emerging technologies, including their capabilities. “Law students will benefit from being adaptable, intellectually curious, and willing to learn, as technology and its applications continue to evolve. Familiarity with generative AI tools, along with the ability to think critically about their use, will help position new lawyers for success,” Fowler added.
