London insurance partner Steven Francis and trainee solicitor Louise Bridoux co-authored an article for Thomson Reuter’s Regulatory Intelligence titled “UK Companies House Identity Verification Offences: How Authorities Will Approach Enforcement Once Transition Period Ends in November.”
Francis and Bridoux explain how new rules issued by Companies House as part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act (ECCTA) are working to address misuse of companies for fraudulent purposes, such as creating shell companies for money laundering. The central change, they note, is an identity verification requirement, aimed at ensuring companies and directors are acting within the law.
The authors close by advising non-fraudsters, companies, and directors to quickly comply with the new regulations to mitigate the risk of a greater criminal inquiry.
