Post-Brexit Data Security Considerations

By Kenneth K. Dort

The UK's decision to leave the European Union has raised numerous questions about future data protection considerations and how to transfer personal data to the UK from other EU/European Economic Area (EEA) members (and from the UK to the U.S.).

In his article, Ken discusses the Brexit vote and its effect on data security issues. Ken offers advice to U.S. companies currently in the European Union, details the timeline of steps the UK will likely follow to withdraw from the EU and discusses what the UK’s relationship with the EU may look like post-Brexit, citing the arrangements Norway and Switzerland now have in place. Ken also presents some best and worst case options for companies should the UK withdraw from both the EU and the EEA.
