Of metro Denver's largest law firms, Faegre Baker Daniels' Denver office had the highest percentage of women attorneys at 45.4 percent, or 44 women attorneys out of 97 total, according to the Denver Business Journal's June 2013 list of Denver-area law firms. Only 33 percent of all Colorado attorneys are women.
In an article on June 14, 2013, Leslie Fields discussed Faegre Baker Daniels' support for women's career advancement and the state of women in the law with the Denver Business Journal (DBJ).
Fields told the DBJ that to handle the impending maternity leave of two pregnant attorneys in Denver, FaegreBD drafted a strategy to ensure both the lawyers' and the firm's needs were met. "Everyone has been able to address that issue and we're able to do business as usual," said Fields, who serves on FaegreBD's management board. "Expectations are being met."
FaegreBD's commitment to work-life balance led Working Mother to name the firm as one of the 50 Best Law Firms for Women in 2012, the DBJ reported. The firm believes diversity among attorneys benefits lawyers, the firm and clients.
"The strength of women is in building relationships and sustaining them," Fields said. "It's also in empathizing with clients and helping them to reach their goals."
Fields, a veteran in eminent domain law, a field dominated by men, said she has made being a woman in the field an asset and tells other women to find a unique area where they can make a name for themselves.
