In search of the right pro bono project for its legal department, Cargill turned to Faegre & Benson for assistance. As Inside Counsel reports, the task was a challenging one for the company whose offices are miles from downtown Minneapolis courthouses and whose lawyers have specialized practice areas related to food and energy commodities, which don't readily translate to pro bono work.
With Faegre & Benson's help, Cargill's legal team got involved in the Hennepin County Housing Court Project, which offers low-income tenants free walk-in legal advice and, in some matters, full representation. Typically, lawyers and paralegals from both the firm and Cargill attend the housing court and collaborate on cases. The work has given Cargill lawyers not only the opportunity to give back to the community the company serves but also to gain valuable courtroom experience.
