Libby Baney Speaks Out in Support of the Stop Online Piracy Act

The Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies (ASOP) and Libby Baney, vice president at B&D Consulting and counsel to ASOP, have verbalized support for the Stop Online Piracy Act, which aims to address the illicit activities of illegal online drug sellers. ASOP announced its support in its press release, "ASOP Supports U.S. House of Representatives' Effort Targeted at Curbing Illegal Online Drug Sellers and Protecting Public Health."

"Illegal online drug sellers should be held accountable for putting consumers' lives at risk. We are encouraged that the House introduction of rogue sites legislation will help address this critical public health and safety issue," Baney said.

Many online pharmacies are safe, but studies estimate that the overwhelming majority of online drug vendors are illegitimate and operate in violation of U.S. laws put in place to protect patients. Internet commerce companies already have the ability to take voluntary actions to stop doing business with illegal online drug sellers. The Stop Online Piracy Act will incentivize companies to take action and stop facilitating this criminal online activity.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) and a bi-partisan group of 12 other members of Congress introduced the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House on Oct. 26, 2011. Three senators introduced similar legislation to the Senate in May 2011.
