“A Primer on Department of Labor Investigations” and “The Fiduciary Interview”

Los Angeles partner Heather Abrigo spoke at the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries Annual Conference (ASPPA), which took place from October 21-24 in National Harbor, Maryland. The conference brought more than 1,500 retirement plan industry professionals together for educational sessions on administration, business development, consulting, defined benefit, fiduciary and recordkeeping topics.

Heather presented “A Primer on Department of Labor Investigations,” a workshop that discussed what attendees need to know about DOL Investigations, from who is getting targeted to how to resolve an investigation so as to avoid sanctions and/or penalties. Heather also presented “The Fiduciary Interview,” which was a mock DOL interview of a plan fiduciary, as the presenters took on the roles of plan sponsor and DOL investigator, guiding the audience through what is often viewed as the most dreaded aspect of a DOL investigation—the interview.

Heather concluded by participating in the general session as an expert in the Hollywood Squares “show.” The session replicated the Hollywood game show where the experts were asked questions on the latest pension issues affecting their industry by ASPPA attendees.
