Joan Akalaonu Named a 2025 ‘Top Women in the Law’ Honoree by Law Bulletin Media

Litigation partner Joan Akalaonu has been recognized by Law Bulletin Media as a 2025 ‘Top Women in Law’. The honorees were selected for their work to advance other women in the profession, being a shining example of leadership and their success.

Akalaonu provides counsel to clients through all steps of complex commercial litigation in both federal and state court, including government enforcement actions, internal investigations and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act compliance matters. Akalaonu is part of the legal team at Faegre Drinker representing African American farmers and ranchers who have experienced recent discrimination from the United States Department of Agriculture when applying for loans. Prior to law school, Akalaonu worked for several years as a children’s social worker in Chicago and London and externed at the Loyola Civitas Child Law Clinic. She is currently the President of the Black Women Lawyers’ Association of Greater Chicago, Inc. and is the co-chair of Faegre Drinker’s Diversity Collective group.

Akalaonu and the other honorees were recognized at the 6th Annual Women in Law: Leaders Leaning In celebration on November 19th in Chicago.
